Dr. Tanner’s
Dental Services

Your health and welbeing is our top priority

Airway Development

We don’t cover up your symptoms of poor oxygen intake. We go straight to the root cause so you or your child can enjoy a lifetime of optimum breathing ~ and associated benefits. Dr. Tanner is well aware that proper airway development is directly related to proper mouth growth which is critical in preventing airway obstruction issues and other related problems later in life. This is why we offer services and guidance related to proper airway development for toddler ages to older adults. Certainly guidance and treatment for proper airway development is best if initiated as early as possible in life, but treatment and reversal of airway obstruction can also be effective well into adulthood.

Children – We are Happy to Treat Yours!

Dental care is just as important for small children as it is for adults. You should begin taking your child to the dentist once their first tooth has appeared, no later than their first birthday.

Pediatric dentistry is a specialized field that requires an additional two to three years of school beyond normal dental school. Luckily for residents of Southern Oregon, Dr. Tanner has the credentials, knowledge, and hands-on experience to meet the dental needs of your children, no matter what their age.

Even though a child will eventually lose all of their baby teeth, excellent dental hygiene is important to keep their mouth, teeth and gums clean and free of disease. Starting regular checkups at an early age also means that your child will learn to trust dentists and will be much more comfortable during their checkups in the future.

Crowns and Bridges

The purpose of a crown is to wrap 360 degrees around a tooth to keep it intact and prevent it from breaking apart. Crowns can be placed when a tooth is cracked, but before it breaks or they can be placed after a tooth breaks to prevent it from breaking further. The stronger the tooth at the time of crown placement, the longer the crown is likely to last.

Implants: Replace a Missing Tooth.

Dental implants are a routine part of modern dentistry. No longer are they considered “experimental” or even “new.” Dental implants have simply revolutionized dentistry — they are now considerd as “tried and true”.

Dental implants are so natural-looking and feeling, you may forget you ever lost a tooth. You know that your confidence about your teeth affects how you feel about yourself, both personally and professionally.

Tooth Extractions – Wisdom Teeth, 3rd Molar, etc.

Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why a tooth extraction may be needed. But don’t worry, Dr. Tanner is called the “Gentle Dentist” for a reason…

Wisdom teeth are extracted to correct problems with the teeth, or to prevent problems that may occur in the future. As your wisdom teeth come in, some of the problems that can occur include:

Your jaw may not be large enough for them, and they may become impacted and unable to break through your gums. Your wisdom teeth may break partway through your gums, causing a flap of gum tissue to grow over them. Food and germs can get trapped under the flap and cause your gums to become red, swollen, and painful. These are signs of periodontal infection. More serious problems can develop from impacted teeth, such as infection, damage to other teeth and bone, or a cyst. One or more of your wisdom teeth may come in at an awkward angle, with the top of the tooth facing forward, backward, or to either side.

Bone Grafting

Dental implant bone grafting is a procedure done in the dental office. It replaces the bone that has been lost with material from the patient’s own body (autogenous bone) or with a natural, artificial, or synthetic substitute. Bone grafting replaces missing bone lost from previous dental extractions, injuries, accidents, cysts, periodontal disease, infections along with many other causes.

Dental implant bone grafting can restore the lost bone and allow you to have new completely functional teeth with dental implants.

Socket Preservation

After a tooth has been removed, the bone that supported this tooth rapidly begins to melt away. When an implant dentist knows that a dental implant will later be placed into this area, a socket preservation grafting procedure is performed to reduce the bone loss in the socket. Socket preservation grafting is done to conserve the bone in the area of the jaw in which a dental implant will be placed.

Sinus Augmentation

The purpose of a sinus augmentation is to raise the maxillary sinus floor and provide adequate space and bone for safe and successful placement of dental implants to replace missing upper molars. The dental implant dentist will recommend a sinus lift procedure when the CT-scan shows that there is not enough bone structure in the upper jaw to support the dental implants.

Comprehensive Hygiene Cleanings

When it comes to dental hygiene, Dr. Tanner believes that prevention is just as important as treatment.

In addition to brushing and flossing at home, visiting your dentist for a comprehensive cleaning should definitely be on your list of things to do.

Deep Cleanings – Essential to improving gum and bone health.

For those who have experienced bleeding gums or periodontal (gum) disease, these are signals that an infection and inflammation are present causing bone loss below the surface of the teeth which eventually can lead to tooth loss. Tooth-brushing alone can not reach these areas of infection and bone loss. Cleaning the plaque and bacteria away, minimizing and preventing future bone loss, helping you keep your teeth for a lifetime and improve your overall health are benefits as well. Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease.

The best solution to this problem is a deep cleaning. In Dr. Tanner’s Medford, Oregon office, hygiene specialist Heather Richard uses her specialized hygiene instruments to clean away the plaque and bacteria below your gum line — minimizing your chance of gum disease and preventing future bone loss.

Teeth Whitening – In-Home, Comfortable, Custom

Dr. Tanner is pleased to offer take-home whitening trays for those patients who are interested in a brighter smile. Take-home whitening consists of custom-fit whitening trays and a Carbamide Peroxide whitening solution. The trays are used for around two hours a day, usually in the evenings. After a period of anywhere from 2-8 weeks, patients have seen improvements of 3-10+ shades.

To schedule a complimentary consultation, contact Dr. Tanner at 541.955.4519. If you are someone that would prefer in-office whitening that can be done in a single appointment please call us and we will be happy to refer you to a dentist in your area that offers it.

Bonded Fillings

Dr. Tanner uses composite fillings to restore areas of your tooth affected by decay. They are an excellent alternative to silver amalgam fillings. If you wish, we are also able to provide silver amalgam removal and replacement with composite fillings.

Dr. Tanner is also able to perform tooth-colored, bonded tooth restorations. In back teeth, this method is used to close a space between the teeth so you don’t collect food between the teeth. In front teeth, this is done to improve the shape and appearance of your teeth.

If you are interested in bonded filling cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Tanner would love to meet with you and discuss your treatment options.

Root Canals

A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

Root canals have a reputation for being painful, but the truth is, most of that pain comes before the actual procedure, as the damage that makes the root canal necessary in the first place can cause symptoms such as severe pain when chewing and prolonged sensitivity to hot/cold temperatures. In reality, the root canal procedure involves about as much pain as having a filling placed.

If you are experiencing toothache or any kind of discomfort, Dr. Tanner would love to schedule an appointment to examine your tooth and determine whether or not a root canal is needed.

Dr. Tanner does not perform root canals but will gladly refer you to someone that does.

Night Guards

Night guards are mouth guards typically used by people who grind their teeth at night or suffer from bruxism, a condition that causes you to clench your teeth during your sleep. A night guard will prevent these habits from damaging your teeth, and will also save you from the headaches and jaw pain often associated with these issues.

Natural Braces

Our tongue, cheeks and lips have a major impact on how our jaws and teeth develop. Dr. Tanner’s primary goal is to help grow and develop your jaws and teeth to your full genetic potential. Each individual is unique so a “one size fits all” approach is typically not in the patients best interest.

Dr. Tanner was one of the very first Myobrace Certified Providers in the United States of America. He has trained extensively with them as well as with other prominent methods of jaw development such as ALF, Crozat, Orthotropics, Healthy Start, Vivos, etc. Dr. Tanner uses a combination of these systems as well as unique and custom treatments that he has developed while working with airway and sleep apnea since 2010.
